About the experience

technowruz returns for its seventh New Year celebration. Come early for sweets and treats, stay for the all-night cardamom tea and dancing into the wee hours. This year, we gather in the shadow of ongoing state violence in Iran, the suppression of dissent, massacres carried out by the Islamic Republic against its own people, and recurring internet blackouts that have made contact with loved ones difficult and uncertain. In this context, we come together to mark the New Year collectively — to share space, sound, food, and movement, in hopes of a brighter future for our loved ones near and far. The night opens with a hardware set from Googoosh Dolls, followed by DJ sets from Hamadi, Arushi Jain, Kamran Sadeghi, and 8ulentina. Instead of our customary diaspora bazaar, the bar will host a community-sourced installation that offers space to memorialize and reflect on the resilience of the Iranian people in the face of extreme repression. A 3,000-year-old tradition, Nowruz ushers in a season of rebirth. It is celebrated on the spring equinox by over 300 million people worldwide, including ethnic groups across present-day Afghanistan, Iran, Kurdistan, Turkmenistan, and elsewhere. Transcending borders and cultures, often in defiance of state proscription, observance of Nowruz is an expression of hope and renewal after a long, dark winter. /// Entry is at the discretion of our door staff. Online purchases are limited to four tickets maximum per person. If tickets are sold out here, we always hold a good amount at the door. We will do our best to admit those without tickets but entrance is not guaranteed. Violence, non-consensual touching, racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ageist or other discriminatory language, and leering are not allowed within our walls or in our back yard. If someone says or does something to make you feel uncomfortable while you’re here, let us know. /// Accessibility: The wheelchair entrance to our indoor space is in the driveway, which is the access point most commonly used to enter Nowadays. During parties the driveway gate is locked, so please ask staff at the street entrance for assistance with entry. All of our bathrooms are gender-neutral. There is one accessible stall indoors. Just ask any Nowadays staff member for the key, and they can show you the way. During parties, seating is available both on and off the dance floor. While we don’t have a dedicated quiet space indoors during parties, the booths next to coat check are a little quieter, and the deck and back yard a little quieter than that. Most nighttime parties include the use of strobe lights and water based haze.
